Twenty years ago, Sekishinkan Karate began with a simple idea: to preserve and share the spirit of traditional Japanese Goju-Ryu Karate-do in Canada.
Established in Vancouver in 2006, Sekishinkan became the first World Shoseikan Karate dojo in Canada. What began with a small group of students gradually developed into a karate community spanning Vancouver and Richmond, bringing together children, youth, adults, families, instructors, competitors, and lifelong practitioners.
From One Dojo to a Karate Family
The past twenty years have never been simply about building a dojo. They have been about building people.
Through regular training, grading examinations, seminars, tournaments, demonstrations, outdoor practices, celebrations, and countless ordinary evenings on the dojo floor, generations of students have learned that Karate-do is not something that can be mastered quickly. It is a journey of patience, discipline, humility, perseverance, and continuous improvement.
Over the years, Sekishinkan has also created opportunities for students to experience Karate beyond Canada. Training connections with Japan, Hong Kong, and China have helped our members understand that Karate is not only a physical practice, but also part of a much larger tradition and international community.
Growing Through Challenges
Twenty years of history naturally includes both successes and difficult moments. There were times when classes were small, events were challenging to organize, and the future was uncertain. There were also changes in locations, generations of students, instructors, and circumstances.
But one lesson has remained constant: the path continues when people are willing to keep walking.
As we have often reminded ourselves, Karate is not about being perfect. It is about getting back up, correcting our mistakes, and continuing forward. That perseverance has shaped Sekishinkan just as much as any medal or promotion.
More Than Competition
Competition has also become an important part of our journey. Our students have represented Sekishinkan at tournaments throughout British Columbia and Canada, gaining experience, confidence, friendship, and a deeper understanding of their own abilities.
The creation of the Sekishinkan Karatedo Championships was another important milestone. The first championship brought our members together in a supportive environment, and the second championship in April 2026 became part of our 20th-anniversary celebration. The event was designed not simply to determine winners, but to encourage participation, discipline, friendship, and the spirit of Goju-Ryu Karate-do.
The medals are meaningful, but they are not the whole story. Behind every medal is a student who trained, struggled, improved, and stepped onto the tatami with courage.
Twenty Years Is Really About People
When we look back, the most valuable memories are not necessarily the biggest events. They are the people.
The children who walked into the dojo shy and uncertain, and gradually found confidence. The teenagers who learned to challenge themselves. The adults who discovered that it is never too late to begin. The senior students who learned that a black belt is not the end of the journey, but another beginning.
And behind every student are parents, families, instructors, volunteers, friends, and supporters who have contributed their time and energy.
Sekishinkan exists because people chose to support it, believe in it, and continue practicing together.
That is the true meaning of our 20-year anniversary.
Preserving the Tradition, Preparing for Tomorrow
As we enter our next chapter, our greatest challenge is also our greatest responsibility: How do we preserve what is valuable while continuing to grow and remain relevant?
Our answer is not to abandon tradition, nor to remain frozen in the past.
We want to continue teaching the fundamentals of traditional Goju-Ryu and Shoseikan Karate-do while providing a safe, positive, and meaningful environment for today's students. We want our young students to develop healthy habits and strong character, our competitors to pursue excellence, our adults to continue challenging themselves, and our senior students to become the next generation of teachers and leaders.
The future of Sekishinkan will not depend on one person. It will depend on whether the spirit can be passed from one generation to the next.
The strongest way to preserve Karate is to practice it, teach it, and share it.
Our Hope for the Next 20 Years
Our hope is simple.
We hope that twenty years from now, people will still be bowing at the dojo entrance, still training together, still learning the fundamentals, still helping one another, and still discovering that Karate-do can make a difference both inside and outside the dojo.
We hope to develop more instructors, more leaders, more dedicated practitioners, and more young people who understand the value of discipline and perseverance.
We hope to strengthen our connections with the wider Karate community in Canada and around the world, while continuing to represent the spirit of Shoseikan and Goju-Ryu with sincerity and respect.
Most importantly, we hope that 赤心館 — Sekishinkan — will continue to mean what its name represents: a genuine and sincere heart.
The Journey Continues
Twenty years is a milestone, but it is not the destination.
There are still many years of training ahead. More students will enter the dojo for the first time. More white belts will become black belts. More generations will learn the same basic techniques, kata, etiquette, and principles that have been passed down before them.
The names and faces may change, but the path remains.
Our first twenty years were built by those who came before us. The next twenty years will be built by all of us together.
To everyone who has trained with us, supported us, taught us, competed with us, volunteered for us, encouraged us, or simply shared part of this journey — thank you.
And to those who have never stepped onto our dojo floor:
Your journey can begin today.
You do not need to be young. You do not need to be strong. You do not need to have previous experience.
You simply need the courage to take the first step.
Come train with us. Come learn with us. Come grow with us.
Join Sekishinkan Karate and become part of the next chapter of our journey.
