THE 1st WSK SEKISHINKAN KARATE-DO CHAMPIONSHIPS
Tournament Q&A:
1. What is the 1st Sekishinkan Championship?
Answer: This is our dojo's internal tournament. The main purpose is to provide a friendly, low-pressure, less aggressive, and fun environment for our members. We try to keep the cost low so more people can join. We will also invite some other friendly dojos to participate.
2. Is my kid ready to join the Individual Kata division in the tournament?
Answer: As long as the member can perform a Kata (it doesn't matter if they perform very well or not), it would be a great chance for them to "try." This is our 1st Tournament, and it is going to be a family-type, easy-going tournament.
3. What would be the Team Kata arrangement?
Answer: Our instructor team has decided to let the members form their own teams. There are mainly two Team Kata divisions. TA01 is for 10 Kyu to 7 Kyu, all ages, male and female. TA02 is for 6 Kyu to 1 Kyu, all ages, male and female. Members will need to report to me their team members and team name.
4. How many people per team in the Team Kata division?
Answer: For our tournament, each team can have 3 or 4 members. Only 3 members will perform in each bout. They can switch the performing members for each bout. If the team wins, all members in the team will receive a medal. Please note that there will be no participation medal for the Team Kata event.
5. Am I ready to join for the Kumite?
Answer: Kumite is free sparring. Some of you may have concerns that you are not ready for the Kumite. The truth is, you will never be ready if you never try. My suggestion is to try to attend more classes, especially the classes at Vancouver Dojo (Wednesday and Friday), then you will get more chances to practice Kumite.
6. What do I need for the Kumite division?
Answer: You will need a mouth guard and a groin protector. You can prepare a red and a blue pair of gloves. Shin pads are optional but highly recommanded. We will have some spares gloves for all athletes to use. Shin pads, Chest protectors or head protectors are optional, and we won't have supplies for you. You will need to get your own if you want to use them.
7.What is Paddle Kumite?
Answer: Paddle Kumite is not the normal Kumite (free sparring). Simply put, Paddle Kumite is designed for younger members. Two athletes are going to hit the paddle, with the faster one getting a point. The first to 5 points wins a match.
8. What division could my child (ages 4-7) join?
Answer: For ages 4-7 members, they could join Paddle Kumite (P00), and if they can do Kata (even halfway), they may also join the K00 Kata. I suggested that, you can bring your kid to the regular class on Wed (6:30pm to 8:00pm) and Friday (7:00pm to 8:30pm) for extra training. I am sure all senior members and the sensei are happy to help them.
9. Why is there a guaranteed medal?
Answer: It's very simple. We want everyone to enjoy and be happy about joining this tournament. There will be 1 gold, 1 silver, and 2 bronze medals. All others will receive a participation medal as a souvenir, except for the Team Kata event.
10.What is the dressing code for the tournament?
Answer: Here is the summary of the major requirement for the Competitors (For both Kata and Kumite division): Competitors can only wear a white Dogi (Karate Uniform) with red or blue belt. Female or young competitors can wear a plain white T-shirt beneath the Karate jacket. Glasses are forbidden. Soft contact lenses can be worn at the Competitor's own risk. Hair slides are prohibited, as are metal hairgrips. Ribbons, beads and other decorations are prohibited. One or two discreet rubber bands on a single ponytail is permitted.
