DUKE OF EDINBURGH'S AWARD

The Duke of Edinburgh Award (DofE) recognizes young people’s achievements across four main areas: Physical Recreation, Skills, Voluntary Service, and Adventurous Journey. Sekishinkan Karate can support its members in various aspects of the award:

  1. Physical Recreation:
Training at Sekishinkan Karate can count toward the Physical Recreation section. Regular karate practice develops strength, stamina, flexibility, and coordination, fulfilling the requirements of physical activity while helping students improve their fitness and martial arts skills.
  2. Skills Development:
The Skills section of the award encourages participants to develop a new talent. Karate itself can be considered a skill, especially when members focus on the deeper aspects of martial arts, such as kata (forms), traditional weapons, or learning about the history and philosophy of karate. Sekishinkan Karate can offer guidance and mentorship in this area, helping students refine their technical abilities.
  3. Voluntary Service:
Older or more advanced members can contribute to the dojo by volunteering their time, assisting with classes, or helping organize events such as tournaments or summer camps. This involvement would count toward the Voluntary Service section of the award, allowing participants to give back to the community and support others in their karate journey.
  4. Adventurous Journey (Optional support):
While Sekishinkan Karate may not directly organize adventurous journeys, the dojo can encourage teamwork and discipline needed for this part of the award. The confidence, leadership skills, and resilience developed through karate training can help members perform well in their Adventurous Journey, which is a self-sufficient outdoor expedition.
  5. Mentorship & Goal Setting:
Sekishinkan Karate can offer structured guidance for students participating in the Duke of Edinburgh Award by helping them set specific goals, track their progress, and receive mentorship. The dojo’s instructors can also assist in validating and recording activities that contribute to the award.

Shihan Futo of Sekishinkan Karate has years of experience as a Scout Leader with Scouts Canada and has successfully assisted numerous scouts in achieving the Duke of Edinburgh Award, including earning a Gold Award himself.

We have helped many young students achieve their Duke of Edinburgh Award. For participants who choose the 'Physical' category, we monitor and report their progress and development. Students can also participate by assisting and volunteering in our kids' classes.

In addition to learning traditional Goju-Ryu Karate, you can work towards your Duke of Edinburgh Award in a professional and friendly environment. Join us today! If you have any questions, please email us.
