Shuseki Shihan, Henry Chan is the founder and the Chief Instructor of WSK Sekishinkan Goju-Ryu Karate-do. Sekishinkan was established in 2006 and is the first dojo of World Shoseikan Karatedo in Canada (aka Canada Shoseikan Karatedo).
Shihan Chan was born in Hong Kong in 70s. He started learning Hung Kuen (Kung Fu) from his uncle when he was 10 years old. In 1987, he started his Karate career with Seibukan with his high school friends in Hong Kong. In 1992, Shihan Chan went to Canada to continue his studies. Shihan Chan has trained under Uchiage Kai under the direction of Shihan Takeshi Uchiage for about two years. Then switched to Vancouver Sekiwakai, under the direction of Shihan Alan Chan, because his family relocated to East Vancouver. Although Shihan Henry Chan had a very busy schedule when studying at BCIT in the year of 1999, he achieved his Seiwakai Shodan from Shihan Shuji Tasaki. In 2004, Shihan Chan went to All-Japan Shoseikan Karatedo in Chiba, Japan for Karate training, under the direction of Kancho, Katsutoshi Ishihara. It was the greatest moment and experience in Shihan Chan’s Karate life while he was staying in Japan with Shoseikan and Ishihara Kancho. At the end of the trip, Shihan Chan achieved the Nidan (Blackbelt 2nd Dan) from Shoseikan. Ishihara Kancho invited him to join the Shoseikan family. In 2005, Shihan Chan officially joined Shoseikan and became the direct student of Ishihara Kancho. The same year, the first Shoseikan Dojo (aka Sekshinkan) in Vancouver, BC has established. The first dojo started at Marpole Scout Hall in Vancouver, BC in 2006. Based on Shihan Chan's effort and performance, Kancho Ishihara granted a Sandan (3rd Dan) with Shidoin title to Shihan Chan. Moreover, Kancho Ishihara officially appointed Shihan Chan, to be the Chief Instructor of the World Shoseikan Karatedo Canada Division and the only authority to esbilish Shoseikan Dojo in Canada. In 2007, Shihan Chan was appointed as the Oversea Executive of World Shoseikan Karate-do. He led a group of members from Vancouver to Toronto, to assist Kancho and other Sensei, for a Karate Seminar. The same year, the Sekishinkan Richmond RCCS dojo started in Richmond, BC. In 2008, Shihan Chan's students, competed in a local tournament in Chiba, Japan. Two students received 3rd place in the tournament. The same year, the 19th World Karate Championships has hosted at Budokan in Tokyo. Also in 2008, Shihan Chan led his students to Zhu Hai visiting the China IOGKF, Lam King Fung Sensei for Goju-Ryu Karate training. Shihan Chan achieved the Blackbelt Godan (5th Dan) with "Shihan" title in 2013 and the Blackbelt Rokudan (6th Dan) with "Renshi" title in 2020. Shihan Chan has travelled around the World to promote Goju-Ryu Karate and World Shoseikan Karate. With his assistance, he allied Sri Lanka and Hong Kong Shibu to the WSK family between 2020 to 2021. In 2023, Shihan Chan was granted the Nanadan (7th Dan) with "Kyoshi" title. He was the youngest Nanadan in the World Shoseikan Karate-do history. |
