Shihan Henry Chan is the founder and the Chief Instructor of Sekishinkan Goju-Ryu Karate-do (aka World Shoseikan Karatedo Canada Shibu).  

Shihan Chan was born in Hong Kong in 1972.  He started learning Hung Kuen (Kung Fu) from his uncle when he’s 10 years old. Until 1987, he started his Karate career with Seibukan (the Hong Kong Hard Contact Karate), with his high school friends. 

In 1992, Shihan Chan went to Canada to continue his studies. Since then, he spent 13 years in Scouting. He leaded nine adults in the leadership team and 50 members of scouts at the ages 11-14. He was the Assistant District Commissioner of Troop Section in Vancouver Coast Region. In between 1994 to 2002, he completed four Woodbadge I and two Woodbadge II, Basic Trainer and Intermediate Trainer Development.

In mid 1993, Shihan Chan has trained under Uchiage Kai under the direction of Shihan Takeshi Uchiage for about two years. He moved to the City of Vancouver, then he trained at Canada Sekiwakai, under the direction of Shihan Alan Chan. 

Shihan Henry Chan has stopped Karate for a couple of years due to the busy schedule at BCIT.  Coming back to training in 2000 and achieved his Shodan at Seiwakai under the permission of Shihan Shuji Tasaki.

In 2004, Shihan Chan went to All-Japan Shoseikan Karatedo in Chiba, Japan for Karate training, under the direction of Kancho, Katsutoshi Ishihara.  It was the greatest moment and experience in Shihan Chan’s Karate life while he’s staying in Japan with Shoseikan and Kancho Ishihara.  At the end of the trip, Kancho Ishihara granted Shihan Chan a Nidan (2nd Dan) and invited him to join the Shoseikan family.

In 2006, Shihan Chan officially joined Shoseikan and started the first Shoseikan Shibu in Vancouver, BC.  The Shoseikan Vancouver Dojo (aka Sekishinkan Karate) has started at the Marpole Scout Hall in Vancouver, BC.  Shihan Chan has achieved his Sandan (3rd Dan) with Shidoin title in the same year. At the same time, Kancho Ishihara has officially appointed Shihan Chan, as the Chief Instructor of World Shoseikan Karatedo Canada Division. 

In 2007, Shihan Chan leaded a group of members from Vancouver to Toronto, to assist Kancho and other Sensei, for a Karate Seminar.  Same year, the Sekishinkan Richmond dojo has started in Richmond, BC.  

In 2008, Shihan Chan leaded a group of students, to train and complete at the tournament in Chiba, Japan. Two students received 3rd place in the tournament. Same year, the 19th World Karate Championships has hosted at Budokan in Tokyo.

Shihan Chan is currently holding a Nanadan (7th Dan) and entitled as “Kyoshi” with the permission of Kancho Ishihara.
