ABOUT SHOSEIKAN AND SEKISHINKAN
WSK Sekishinkan Karate-do has been teaching traditional Japanese Goju-Ryu Karate-do to children, adults, and casual learners in Vancouver and Richmond since 2006. We are affiliated with the World Karate Federation (WKF), Karate Canada, and hold membership in the All-Japan Karate Federation Goju-Kai, Karate BC, the Coaching Association of Canada (CAC), and World Shoseikan Karate-do (WSK). We also enrolled in and participates in the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP).
All-Japan Shoseikan Karate-do was founded by our Soke, Katsutoshi Ishihara, in Chiba Prefecture, Japan, in 1968. Ishihara is one of the active students of Gogen Yamaguchi, a world-renowned Karatedo-ka. Since 1971, Ishihara has traveled worldwide to promote Shoseikan and Goju-Ryu Karate-do. As a result, World Shoseikan Karate (WSK) was formed, aiding in the global development of karate. Currently, we have over 50 Shibu Dojos in Japan, Canada, the USA, Hong Kong, India, Pondicherry, Chennai, Dubai, Sri Lanka, Mexico, and the United Kingdom.
In 2006, Sekishinkan Karate-do was established in Vancouver, BC, by Shihan Henry Chan (current 7th Dan), a direct student of Shoseikan’s Chief Director (Kancho), Katsutoshi Ishihara. As a result, Sekishinkan became the first Shoseikan dojo in Canada. In 2007, Kancho Ishihara officially appointed Shihan Chan as the Chief Instructor of World Shoseikan Karate Canada Division, granting permission to use the Shoseikan's name and Logo in Canada. Following the spirit and teachings of Kancho Ishihara, Shihan Chan aims to promote Goju-Ryu Karate-do and the Shoseikan spirit across Canada and North America.
The word "Seki" means red and warm, and "Shin" means heart. Together, "Seki-shin" signifies "a pure and genuine heart as it was at birth." We hope that our Karate-do spirit, with a warm heart, continues to flourish under the leadership of Shihan Chan at WSK Sekishinkan Karate-do.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Sekishinkan is World Shoseikan Karate Canada Division and is authorized by Katsutoshi Ishihara, the Chief Master of World Shoseikan Karate-do. Any other clubs using Shoseikan's name in Canada may be un-authorized and does not have the affiliation with WSK.
